BIG WAVE SURFING

About
Extreme is a visual editorial scroll focused on big wave surfing. Through research, photography and editorial composition, the project explores the relationship between adrenaline, risk and human ambition within extreme sports.
WHY I CHOSE THIS TOPIC
Surfing and extreme sports have always interested me, especially the relationship between adrenaline, fear and nature. Visiting places like Nazaré and Jaws made that fascination feel much more real and personal.
Through this project, I wanted to translate the intensity and scale of big wave surfing into a visual editorial experience using photography, typography and movement.
Photography Exploration
PHOTOGRAPHY AS EMOTIONAL REFERENCE
Alongside editorial research, I explored surf photography as a way of studying scale, movement and atmosphere.
The relationship between the small human figure and the overwhelming scale of the ocean became one of the central visual themes of the project.
Research
UNDERSTANDING THE CULTURE OF BIG WAVE SURFING
This phase focused on understanding the history, culture and evolution of big wave surfing. Research topics included Mavericks, Nazaré, the origins of tow-in surfing, technological advancements and the athletes that shaped the sport.
Visual Identity
BUILDING TENSION THROUGH COMPOSITION
The visual language of Extreme combines black-and-white photography with yellow accents inspired by warning signs and extreme sports culture. Diagonal compositions create movement and instability, while large-scale imagery emphasizes the tension between the surfer and the wave.
